What parts of Los Angeles are safe and relatively inexpensive to live?

I think West Hollywood fits your profile pretty well (young in early 20s, ***…). It’s not ridiculously expensive, but it’s not cheap either. But it’s a nice part of Los Angeles, and fun.

If you are *** and looking for cheap, you might try long beach, sometimes known as the *** ghetto. west hollywood is your basic other option, but more expensive (check losangeles.craigslist.com and see if you think it’s too expensive).

Nothing is expensive in the LA area. But for your profile, West Hollywood would probably be your best bet. There is a large gay/lesbian/transgender population in West Hollywood, along with a number of stores to accomidate (mainly on Santa Monica Blvd.) There are a number of nightclubs in West Hollywood or very close by that cater to gays (Check the LA Weekly, available for free in many locations including The Pleasure Chest @ 7733 Santa Monica Blvd.) Hope this helps.

Depends what you mean by “inexpensive.” You can get a one-bedroom for about $1200 in south Redondo Beach, which is a relatively nice area, close to the beach, close to the Airport etc. This is pretty cheap considering the area. Other than that, you can live in the valley (Van Nuys etc.) for a couple of hundred less, but you would have to commute and not too safe. Check out Craigslist.
PS: We don’t care about you being gay, but if you want some eyecandy you definitely want to go to West Hollywood–that’s where it’s happenin’. Good luck!
